Summary

Human After All was Daft Punk’s third studio album, following on from the monumental successes of their first two, Homework and Discovery, in true Daft Punk style.

What’s the hook?

On Human After All, Thomas Bangalter and Guy-Manuel de Homem-Christo did the opposite of what they did in the production of Discovery, by recording the album over a significantly shorter amount of time, only 10 days, with a minimal set up of only two guitarists, two drum machines, a vocoder and one eight-track machine. The album’s artwork theme continued a visual image used across the first two albums, using the band’s iconic logo on a minimal backdrop. Thomas Bangalter cited George Orwell’s famous book 1984 as inspiration for putting the logo inside of a television screen. This theme carries on throughout the album, with Bangalter stating this album was the opposite of the feel good, happy Homework and Discovery albums; focusing on “extremely tormented and sad and terrifying looks at technology, yet there can be some beauty and emoting from it.” The album spawned four singles, including the two hits Robot Rock and Technologic; the latter of which was famously used on an iPod advert.
