Released on 14th April 1982, Diver Down is the fifth album from American rock band Van Halen. A commercial success, it helped push Van Halen further into the mainstream.
Out of a total of 12 tracks, the album included 5 covers, including The Kinks’ ‘Where Have All The Good Times Gone,’ and Roy Orbison’s ‘(Oh) Pretty Woman’. The decision to do several covers was one which came courtesy of Warner Brothers, reportedly using the rationale that the album was more likely to be a success if it was filled with songs which had already been hits.
Diver Down provided the band with the highest chart placement of their career up to that point, hitting number 3 on the US Billboard 200. The album spent 65 weeks in the US album chart and went on to be certified 4x Platinum in the US.
